The Macha Jewelry line is inspired by the vintage fashion researched by Bernice Kelly in her career as a designer for various renowned clothing brands from Karen Millen to Abercrombie and Fitch. Each piece evokes a sense of past history, using antique finishes and textures, and is influenced by the culture and events which surround an upbringing in turbulent Northern Ireland.
Bernice currently works between her studio in Brooklyn, New York, and another in Winchester, England. She regularly returns home to the town of Armagh in Northern Ireland which inspired the Macha brand name. As a fashion designer for almost ten years, she developed a keen business sense, encouraging her to develop a hobby of making jewelry into her own brand. Bernice studied fine jewelry as an art form at Kristin Hanson’s Jewelry school in New York in the latter half of 2007.
Macha jewelry is inspired by the DIY spirit of subcultures in fashion and music, crossing gender lines and promoting independance. Every piece is handmade and often created by accident, relishing in the previously unwanted, and with just a little sprinkling of good old Irish cheek.
Macha uses online promotional & marketing mediums including Myspace and Facebook, under the alias ‘The Be Side’, enabling potential clients to become involved in the creation of the brand. This is complimented by Bernice’s portfolio of photography, recording the live music and travel experiences which inspire the jewelry line. |
